So, what’s the deal with Patreon?
A long long long long time ago artists were either independently wealthy, or supported by the wealthy — kings, the church, rich merchants. The art that got made was the art that they liked. Most of our ancient cultural heritage was decided upon by these elites.
More recently this system of patronage was replaced by a free market in which the art which was produced was that which was the most commercial. Again, excepting the few standouts who had enough money to experiment freely, the art that got made was the art that could earn the creator a living. Humanity’s cultural output was determined by the cold hard reality of capitalism.
This is still, largely, how it works, especially in the world of publishing. I’m not independently wealthy, so I have to focus on making the art that will sell in formats that can be sold. The invisible hand of the free market guides my creative choices. I cannot afford to spend time working on projects that won’t pay off in the end. I just don’t have the resources. This fear of financial disaster stifles my creativity.
There’s got to be a better way!
Patreon is a service that allows a creator’s fans to pledge a certain amount of money per month, and in return, said creative can offer these patrons little bonuses and exclusive content. It’s similar to the old system of patronage, but democratized… instead of a given wealthy elite dictating a creator’s output, an author or artist or designer or musician’s fans can, collectively, contribute money to allow that creator the breathing room to make what they want.
So. You donate to my Patreon, unshackling me from the directives of free-market capitalism, allowing me to take greater creative risks without fear that I’ll default on my rent, and in return I give you cool exclusive stuff.
What kind of stuff?
Glad you asked! In addition to my undying gratitude:
Donate the minimum of just $1 a month, and you get an ebook copy of whatever it is I release. If you’re a gamer, you’ll also get playtest copies of the RPG supplements I produce through Taoscordian Games.
$3 gets you an early copy, well before release. I’ll also share pre-edit copy as it’s produced, giving you sneak peaks of what’s coming, and when I make desktop wallpaper out of my covers you get a copy.
$5 gets your name in each books’ acknowledgements. I also upgrade you to a Patreon exclusive special edition of each ebook, and I’ll mail you a postcard every month. Nice, right?
$10 upgrades your electronic copy to a paperback, mailed out to you. You still get the special edition ebook. Did I mention that? Each reward tier gets all the stuff the lower tiers get, too.
For $25 I’ll order the paperback myself, sign it, then ship it to you, maybe with some bookmarks or other goodies. This might cost a bit more if you live somewhere that costs a lot to ship to., but that’ll be a case by case thing.
One last thing. At different collective donation thresholds I’ll be releasing group rewards… kinda like stretch goals with a kickstarter. When we hit our first goal at $50/month, then I’ll start doing a regular production podcast, where I answer fanmail, talk about my process, and my in-progress projects.
So, that’s it. That’s the pitch. If you like what I do and want to help me do it, please consider contributing to my Patreon. It would mean a lot to me.
